About
Deyana currently lives on the Hawaiian Island of Kauai'i. She spent many years in the inner city of Chicago working and showing after graduating from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago in 1984.
She says that Chicago still has a hold on her, but so does Kauai'i. "I miss the energy of the city, but the beauty here is undeniable. The energy can change fast in both Chicago and Kauai'i. Kauai'i is shaped like a is baseball diamond and the surrounding waters change direction with the swells and tides. The energy created by the power of the ocean is undeniable and perpetual. I admire it."
Deyana grew up on the water on in Wisconsin. "My close friend and I spent much of our time in the swamp close to our house. The water has always been a large part of my make up. I remember the first time I saw an ocean. I was six, and it was the Atlantic. It was amazing, so salty and so buoyant. From that moment, I wanted to live by an ocean with all the mysterious and extraordinary creatures. Without thinking about it, I picked the largest one."
Deyana's work has always acknowledged the influence and interrelationships we have on our surroundings and that which our surroundings have on us, whether tangible or perceived. She takes special note on and our interrelationship and dependence on water as life force and stage.
